Case study

Residential Scale Model

Translating architectural drawings into a printable physical model

Problem

Translate architectural drawings into a gift-sized physical model while keeping the structure recognizable and printable at a much smaller scale.

Design

I interpreted private architectural drawings as a simplified scale model. I divided the structure into roughly four printable sections and omitted identifying plans, addresses, and owner details from the portfolio.

Key decisions

The hardest tradeoff was scale accuracy versus printable wall and roof thickness. Thin features needed reinforcement without making the finished model look heavy or distorted.

Result & lesson

The four sections printed and assembled into a 10 × 8 × 15-inch model after more than 48 hours of printing. A future version would add finer surface detail and more refined exterior features.

Case study

HSW File Organizer

Compact tool storage for a modular hexagon wall system

Problem

Store hand files within reach while keeping a crowded workbench clear and integrating with an existing Hexagon Storage Wall.

Design

I built the organizer around an HSW-compatible hexagonal connector and arranged individual openings to separate the tools while keeping them visible.

Key decisions

The geometry needed to support the loaded tools, print cleanly, and remain compact. PETG provided practical toughness for repeated shop use.

Result & lesson

The organizer has continued to hold the files during regular shop use. That practical use confirmed the connector and body were suitable for their intended purpose.

Case study

GOOD AM Phone Stand

A clock-inspired desk accessory tuned for iPhone StandBy mode

Problem

Create a playful desk accessory that holds a phone at an angle where an iPhone reliably enters landscape StandBy mode.

Design

The printed digits stay fixed; the object is intentionally a phone stand, not an electronic clock. I shaped the body around the phone’s resting position and visual clock form.

Key decisions

Iterations focused on printability and viewing angle. The stand needed enough support and clearance for the phone while still reading immediately as a small alarm clock.

Result & lesson

The final print supports an iPhone at the intended landscape angle and triggers StandBy mode in use. It remains a passive desk accessory, with no electronics or moving display inside.
